Carnosine and taurine contents of type I, IIA and IIB fibres in the middle gluteal muscle
Observational studyHorses
- Design
- Observational study
- Subjects
- 5 horses (7 muscle samples)
- Dose used in the study
- not applicable (no supplement given)
- Duration
- single biopsy sampling
- What was measured
- Carnosine and taurine measured by HPLC in individually dissected and histochemically typed single fibres (type I, IIA, IIB) from the middle gluteal muscle.
What the authors reported
The authors report carnosine of about 25 mmol/kg dry matter in type I fibres, about 95 in type IIA and about 104 in type IIB. Taurine was about 54 mmol/kg dry matter in type I, about 3 in IIA and about 2 in IIB. They conclude the higher carnosine in type II fibres supports its role in intramuscular acid-base regulation, and suggest the different distribution of taurine may make its appearance in plasma a marker of fibre damage.
Limits of this study
Five horses. Values are direct single-fibre measurements, which differ from the regression estimates in Sewell 1992 (54, 85, 180 mmol/kg).
