- What was measured
- Quenching of 4-hydroxy-trans-2-nonenal (HNE) by carnosine compared with glutathione in buffer, structure of the reaction products by ESI-MS/MS and NMR, and detection of adducts in rat skeletal muscle homogenate incubated with HNE.
What the authors reported
Carnosine quenched HNE, consuming 48.2 percent after 1 hour at a 10 to 1 molar ratio, less reactive than glutathione. Two products were identified: a Michael adduct on the imidazole nitrogen and an imine adduct on the beta-alanine amino group. In rat muscle homogenate exposed to HNE, Michael adducts with glutathione, carnosine and anserine were detected, which the authors take as evidence that histidine dipeptides take part in detoxifying lipid peroxidation aldehydes in muscle.
Limits of this study
Chemical and tissue-homogenate work; no in vivo dosing. Slug carries an a suffix because another Aldini 2002 paper is in this set; the database already holds an entry named aldini-2002, so check for duplication. Abstract only.
