- What was measured
- Calcium accumulation and calcium release by heavy sarcoplasmic reticulum vesicles from rabbit skeletal muscle in the presence of carnosine, anserine, histidine or beta-alanine.
What the authors reported
Carnosine reduced the rate of calcium accumulation by heavy sarcoplasmic reticulum through a rapid, dose-dependent calcium release via ruthenium red-sensitive channels, with half-maximal effect at 8.7 mM; anserine acted at 2.7 mM. Histidine and beta-alanine, alone or together, did not release calcium. Carnosine also increased channel sensitivity to caffeine, AMP and calcium and reduced inhibition by low magnesium.
Limits of this study
Isolated rabbit membrane preparation. Abstract only.
