- What was measured
- Production and characterisation of antisera against carnosine and anserine, and immunolocalisation of the dipeptides in rodent and avian central nervous system together with chemical analysis of brain regions.
What the authors reported
The anserine antiserum was specific while the carnosine antiserum cross-reacted with carnosine, homocarnosine and anserine. Carnosine immunoreactivity in the olfactory system was confined to mature olfactory receptor neurons, their axons and glomerular terminals; elsewhere in rodent brain, astrocytes and Bergmann glia accounted for the staining. In birds, anserine-like immunoreactivity was widespread and glial. Olfactory receptor neurons appear to be the only neurons expressing carnosine.
Limits of this study
