Carnosine Increases Efficiency of DOPA Therapy of Parkinson's Disease: A Pilot Study
Controlled trialHumansWith L-DOPA based standard therapy (both groups)
This study tested carnosine together with L-DOPA based standard therapy (both groups). Its results cannot be assigned to carnosine alone. More combination studies.

What the authors reported
Adding carnosine to standard Parkinson's disease treatment was associated with significant neurological improvement. Red cell Cu/Zn-SOD was higher, and plasma protein carbonyls and lipid hydroperoxides were lower. Platelet MAO B activity did not change noticeably. The authors described this as a pilot study.
Limits of this study
Pilot study. Sample size, dose, duration and statistics not given in the abstract. Not described as blinded in the abstract. The journal issued an erratum (Rejuvenation Research 2008;11(5):988) correcting the title wording. Full text not read.
