Denervation in the primary olfactory pathway of mice. III. Effect on enzymes of carnosine metabolism

- What was measured
- Carnosine synthetase and carnosinase activities in the mouse primary olfactory pathway after peripheral deafferentation or central denervation.
What the authors reported
Carnosine synthetase activity in the mouse primary olfactory pathway exceeded that of other tissues and brain regions, while carnosinase was high only in the olfactory epithelium. Peripheral deafferentation or central denervation selectively reduced carnosine synthetase in the reciprocal part of the pathway, implying localisation within receptor neurons and supporting a role for carnosine in olfactory transmission.
Limits of this study
Mouse neurochemistry. Abstract only.
