Increased broiler muscle carnosine and anserine following histidine supplementation of commercial broiler feed concentrate

Haug A, Rodbotten R, Mydland LT, et al.. Acta Agriculturae Scandinavica, Section A - Animal Science, 2008; 58(2):71-77.

Controlled trialOther animalsWith histidine (carnosine precursor)

This study tested carnosine together with histidine (carnosine precursor). Its results cannot be assigned to carnosine alone. More combination studies.

Design
Controlled trial
Dose used in the study
1 g/kg histidine added to feed
What was measured
Breast muscle carnosine and anserine in broiler chickens.

What the authors reported

Histidine supplementation raised breast muscle carnosine by about 64 percent and anserine by about 10 percent. The authors suggested the standard Norwegian broiler feed may contain less histidine than optimal dipeptide synthesis requires.

Limits of this study

Poultry; sample size and duration not stated in abstract. Abstract only.
