- What was measured
- Narrative review of carnosine's physiological roles in skeletal muscle and in other tissues, and of the literature on potential therapeutic effects.
What the authors reported
The authors state that carnosine was first found in skeletal muscle, where it is most concentrated, and that most research has focused on muscle and on whether supplementation improves athletic performance. They state that newer research suggests carnosine may also act in the brain, heart, pancreas, kidney and cancer cells. They review the literature on possible therapeutic uses and describe the picture as complicated.
Limits of this study
Narrative review; the authors describe the evidence on therapeutic effects as complicated.
