- Book-chapter review of proposed mechanisms of carnosine and of evidence for anti-ageing activity in cells and animals.
What the authors reported
The author reports that carnosine has shown anti-ageing activity at cellular and whole-animal levels. Proposed mechanisms include scavenging of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, chelation of zinc and copper, prevention of glycation and cross-linking, and reaction with aldehydes such as malondialdehyde, methylglyoxal, hydroxynonenal and acetaldehyde. The chapter discusses possible suppression of secondary complications of diabetes and of ischaemia-reperfusion injury, and more speculative roles including transglutaminase inhibition, effects on proteolysis and ADP-ribose metabolism. Evidence on diabetic complications, neurodegeneration and cancer is considered briefly.
Limits of this study
Narrative review; several of the roles discussed are described by the author as speculative.
