Carnosine-synthesis in cultures of rat glial cells is restricted to oligodendrocytes and carnosine uptake to astrocytes

- What was measured
- Uptake of radiolabelled beta-alanine, synthesis of radiolabelled carnosine and uptake of carnosine in cultured rat oligodendrocytes and astrocytes, including astroglia depleted of oligodendrocyte lineage cells.
What the authors reported
Both glial culture types took up beta-alanine, but carnosine synthesis occurred only in oligodendrocyte cultures from brain and spinal cord and increased with oligodendrocyte differentiation; astroglia depleted of oligodendrocyte lineage cells did not synthesise carnosine. Carnosine uptake, by contrast, was effective only in astrocytes.
Limits of this study
