Marlin DJ, Harris RC, Gash SP, Snow DH. Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Comparative Physiology, 1989; 93(3):629-632.

Observational studyHorses

Design
Observational study
Subjects
85 Thoroughbred horses
Dose used in the study
not applicable (no supplement given)
Duration
single biopsy sampling
What was measured
Carnosine content of gluteus medius biopsies by automated HPLC, compared across sex (colts, geldings, fillies) and age groups.

What the authors reported

No significant sex difference was found between colts, geldings and fillies. There was a trend towards lower muscle carnosine with age, significant only between 1-year-old untrained horses and horses aged 4 years and over (P < 0.002).

Limits of this study

The abstract gives no carnosine concentrations and reports no training result, although training is in the title. Cross-sectional, so age and training are confounded. Full text not read.
