What was measured
Cell death and nitric oxide in primary rat astroglial cultures treated with lipopolysaccharide and interferon-gamma; nitric oxide and free radical scavenging in cell-free systems.

What the authors reported

Carnosine protected astroglial cells from nitric oxide-mediated death. Its nitric oxide scavenging correlated with its free radical scavenging, and cell-free experiments confirmed a direct interaction. Among related compounds only histidine showed comparable nitric oxide trapping.

Limits of this study

Cell culture; concentrations not stated in abstract. Full text not read.
