Antioxidant effect of carnosine pretreatment on cisplatin-induced renal oxidative stress in rats
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Subjects
- 24 male Wistar rats (4 groups of 6)
- Dose used in the study
- 10 mg/kg carnosine for 10 consecutive days; cisplatin 3 mg/kg on 5 alternate days
- Duration
- 10 days of carnosine
- What was measured
- Plasma creatinine, urea, malondialdehyde and nitrate; kidney malondialdehyde, 4-HNE, glutathione, superoxide dismutase and catalase; kidney weight, body weight and renal histology.
What the authors reported
Cisplatin raised kidney malondialdehyde and 4-HNE, lowered glutathione, superoxide dismutase and catalase, increased kidney weight, reduced body weight and produced pathological changes in kidney tissue. Carnosine pretreatment reduced these changes and counteracted the effects of cisplatin.
Limits of this study
Small rat study; route of carnosine administration not stated in abstract. Numerical results not given in the abstract. Abstract only.
