Buffering capacity of deproteinized human vastus lateralis muscle

Parkhouse WS, McKenzie DC, Hochachka PW, et al.. Journal of Applied Physiology, 1985; 58(1):14-17.

Observational studyHumans

Design
Observational study
Subjects
20 men in four groups of five (sprinters/800 m runners, rowers, marathoners, untrained)
What was measured
Muscle buffer capacity, carnosine, histidine and fast-twitch fibre percentage from resting vastus lateralis biopsies; treadmill run to fatigue at 20% incline and 3.5 m/s.

What the authors reported

Sprinters and rowers had significantly higher buffer capacity, muscle carnosine and high-intensity run performance than marathoners and untrained men (P < 0.01), who did not differ from each other. Buffer capacity showed only low correlations with carnosine content and fast-twitch fibre percentage (P < 0.05).

Limits of this study

Cross-sectional comparison of trained groups; five per group. Full text not read.
