- What was measured
- Carnosine, anserine and lysine content of skeletal muscles of male and female CD1 mice, with postnatal ontogenic studies and hormonal manipulation.
What the authors reported
Anserine exceeded carnosine in all adult mouse muscles studied and both dipeptides were markedly higher in males than females. Carnosine synthesis was up-regulated by testosterone whereas anserine rose with age. Hind-leg muscles held more carnosine and anserine than fore-leg or pectoral muscles; lysine showed the opposite sex pattern, higher in females.
Limits of this study
Mouse study; mechanisms inferred from hormonal manipulation. Abstract only.
