- What was measured
- Neurological function and infarct size after permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion in histidine decarboxylase knockout and wild-type mice; glutamate levels, GLT-1 expression, mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial ROS in astrocytes exposed to ischaemia in vivo and in vitro.
What the authors reported
Carnosine improved neurological function and reduced infarct size to the same extent in knockout and wild-type mice, so the effect did not depend on the histaminergic pathway. Carnosine lowered glutamate, preserved astrocyte GLT-1 expression, suppressed loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial ROS after oxygen-glucose deprivation, and reversed the rotenone-induced fall in GLT-1.
