Effect of Oral carnosine supplementation on urinary TGF-beta in diabetic nephropathy: a randomized controlled trial
Randomised controlled trialHumans
- Design
- Randomised controlled trial
- Subjects
- 40 adults with diabetic nephropathy and albuminuria 30 to 299 mg/day
- Dose used in the study
- 2 g carnosine per day, added to standard therapy
- Duration
- 12 weeks
- What was measured
- Primary outcome: urinary TGF-beta (ELISA). Also urine albumin, renal function and metabolic profile.
What the authors reported
Urinary TGF-beta fell by 17.8% from baseline with carnosine and tended to rise (+16.9%) with placebo (between-group p < 0.05). Blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, glomerular filtration rate and urinary albumin did not change. No serious side effects in either group.
Limits of this study
Small trial (40 participants), apparently single centre. Surrogate marker outcome; kidney function and albuminuria unchanged. Retrospectively registered (TCTR20200724002). Full text not read.
