High level of skeletal muscle carnosine contributes to the latter half of exercise performance during 30-s maximal cycle ergometer sprinting
Observational studyHumans
- Design
- Observational study
- Subjects
- 11 healthy men
- What was measured
- Vastus lateralis biopsy carnosine concentration and fibre-type distribution; mean power during a 30-second maximal cycle sprint, analysed in 5-second phases.
What the authors reported
Muscle carnosine correlated with type IIX fibre proportion (r=0.646, p<0.05) and with mean power per body mass over the whole sprint (r=0.785, p<0.01). Correlations were also significant for the 21-25 s (r=0.694) and 26-30 s (r=0.660) phases. The authors concluded that muscle carnosine is an important factor in high-intensity exercise performance, particularly its later part.
Limits of this study
