- What was measured
- Neurological deficit at 12, 24 and 72 hours and infarct volume at 72 hours in rats with permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion; mRNA for STAT3 and Pim-1; protein for phosphorylated STAT3, Pim-1, bcl-2 and cleaved caspase-3.
What the authors reported
L-carnosine-treated rats had milder neurological deficits and smaller infarct volumes than vehicle-treated rats at 72 hours, with higher STAT3 and Pim-1 mRNA, higher pSTAT3, Pim-1 and bcl-2 protein, and lower cleaved caspase-3. The authors conclude that L-carnosine inhibits neuronal apoptosis after acute cerebral ischaemia through the STAT3 pathway.
