What was measured
Uptake kinetics of 14C-ALA and 3H-carnosine in cultured neonatal rat astrocytes and in astrocytes from PEPT2 wild-type and knockout mice.

What the authors reported

Carnosine uptake in rat astrocytes was inhibited by dipeptides but not by histidine, was saturable (Vmax 447 pmol/mg/min, Km 43 microM) and pH sensitive. Astrocytes from PEPT2 knockout mice showed a 92 percent reduction in carnosine uptake and a 62 percent reduction in ALA uptake, so PEPT2 is the main transporter for astrocytic carnosine uptake.

Limits of this study

Neonatal astrocyte cultures. Abstract only.
