What was measured
Histochemical nitric oxide synthase reaction in tissue sections using carnosine or arginine as substrate.

What the authors reported

The authors state there has been little evidence that arginine is the natural substrate for nitric oxide synthase activity. They report that carnosine gave a stronger NOS reaction than arginine in tissue sections and conclude it is likely to be the true substrate.

Limits of this study

Histochemical observation with no quantitative data in the abstract; the proposal has not been widely adopted. Full text not read.
