What was measured
Viability, protein carbonyl modification and reactive oxygen species in human peritoneal mesothelial cells incubated with glucose degradation products with or without carnosine for short and prolonged periods.

What the authors reported

Carnosine enhanced cell viability, preserved proteins from carbonyl modification and decreased reactive oxygen species, particularly against glucose degradation product toxicity. The authors proposed carnosine as a candidate for improving peritoneal dialysis fluid biocompatibility.

Limits of this study

Human cells in culture; concentrations not stated in abstract. Full text not read.
