Protective effect of orally administered carnosine on bleomycin-induced lung injury

Cuzzocrea S, Genovese T, Failla M, et al.. American Journal of Physiology-Lung Cellular and Molecular Physiology, 2007; 292(5):L1095-L1104.

Controlled trialOther animals

Design
Controlled trial
Dose used in the study
150 mg/kg/day carnosine by oral bolus
Duration
1 week after bleomycin
What was measured
Bronchoalveolar lavage cell counts, TGF-beta, lung histology, immunohistochemistry and apoptosis in mice given intratracheal bleomycin.

What the authors reported

After intratracheal bleomycin, mice given oral carnosine had less lung damage and inflammation than bleomycin controls at one week. The authors report reductions in body weight loss, mortality, neutrophil infiltration (myeloperoxidase and lavage cell counts), lung oedema, histological injury and collagen deposition, lavage TGF-beta, several immunostaining markers and apoptosis. Numeric outcome values are not given in the abstract.

Limits of this study

Group sizes not stated in abstract. Rodents lack serum carnosinase, so oral results do not carry over to people. Full text not read.
