- Isolation and description of a new nitrogen-containing base from Liebig's meat extract, which the authors named carnosine (from the Latin carnis, flesh).
What the authors reported
This is the paper that first reported carnosine. Gulewitsch and Amiradžibi isolated a new organic base from meat extract and named it carnosine. The paper is a short chemical communication in German; the abstract and experimental detail were not available for checking, so only the bibliographic record is reported here. Later reviews (for example Boldyrev, Aldini and Derave 2013) date the discovery of carnosine to this 1900 publication.
Limits of this study
Historical chemistry paper of two pages; no biological experiments. Only the bibliographic record, not the content, could be verified online.
