What was measured
Tensile strength of incision wounds in rats given hydrocortisone to suppress healing, after local carnosine, beta-alanine, histidine or combined treatment.

What the authors reported

In rats given hydrocortisone to suppress healing, local carnosine significantly increased skin tensile strength at incision wounds compared with untreated animals. Beta-alanine plus histidine had a similar effect, but beta-alanine alone did not. Carnosine also significantly increased granulation suppressed by cortisone, mitomycin C, 5-fluorouracil and bleomycin. The authors attribute the effect to histamine derived from carnosine stimulating early effusion and to beta-alanine stimulating collagen synthesis.
