What was measured
Transient absorption spectra after pulse radiolysis of aqueous carnosine solutions under different gases, and spectra of stable radiolysis products.

What the authors reported

In the presence of oxygen carnosine behaved as a multifunctional antioxidant. Even at low concentration it formed a charge-transfer complex with the superoxide radical (absorbance maximum 265 nm versus 255 nm for superoxide) that altered superoxide reactivity, and it reacted very rapidly with hydroxyl radicals to form a stable product.

Limits of this study

Radiation chemistry in water; no biological system. Abstract only.
