Binding of copper(II) to carnosine: Raman and IR spectroscopic study

- What was measured
- Raman and FTIR spectra of carnosine and its copper(II) complexes at different pH values.
What the authors reported
At pH 7 and 9 carnosine exists as an equilibrium of two imidazole tautomers with tautomer I predominant, and metal coordination shifts this equilibrium. At neutral and basic pH with near-equimolar copper the main species is a dimer in which each ligand binds copper through amino, carboxylate and amide donors while imidazole nitrogens bridge the copper ions; at slightly acidic pH two monomeric complexes form, one with and one without imidazole coordination.
Limits of this study
