Exclusion of polymorphisms in carnosinase genes (CNDP1 and CNDP2) as a cause of diabetic nephropathy in type 1 diabetes

Wanic K, Placha G, Dunn J, et al.. Diabetes, 2008; 57(9):2547-2551.

Observational studyHumans

Design
Observational study
Subjects
1,269 Caucasian patients with type 1 diabetes
Duration
6-year follow-up
What was measured
D18S880 microsatellite and 21 SNPs across CNDP2-CNDP1 in 613 normoalbuminuric, 445 proteinuric and 211 end-stage renal disease patients; incident ESRD over 6 years.

What the authors reported

No significant association was found between CNDP1 or CNDP2 variants and diabetic nephropathy or end-stage renal disease in type 1 diabetes. A 6-year follow-up in which 135 patients progressed to ESRD supported the negative result.

Limits of this study

Genetic association study in type 1 diabetes only; results do not address type 2 diabetes, where CNDP1 associations were originally reported. Abstract only.
