- Review of cellular localisation and proposed functions of carnosine-related dipeptides in mammalian nervous tissue.
What the authors reported
The dipeptides are widely distributed in brain and spinal cord, in neurons and glia including mature astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, olfactory receptor neurons and putative migrating neuroblasts. No function has been definitively shown; the evidence points to protective and possibly neuromodulatory roles.
