Residence time of polaprezinc (zinc L-carnosine complex) in the rat stomach and adhesiveness to ulcerous sites
Laboratory studyOther animalsWith zinc (as polaprezinc)
This study tested carnosine together with zinc (as polaprezinc). Its results cannot be assigned to carnosine alone. More combination studies.

- What was measured
- Gastric residence time and tissue radioactivity after oral 14C- and 65Zn-labelled polaprezinc, L-carnosine or zinc sulfate, and radioactivity at acetic acid-induced ulcer sites.
What the authors reported
Mean gastric residence time of polaprezinc was about 2 hours, double that of L-carnosine or zinc sulfate, and gastric tissue exposure (AUC 0 to 8 hours) was 1.7 times greater. In rats with acetic acid-induced ulcers, radioactivity at ulcer sites was greater with polaprezinc than with polaprezinc dissolved in acid. The authors conclude polaprezinc stays in the stomach longer and adheres to ulcer sites more than zinc or L-carnosine, which they attribute to its insolubility.
Limits of this study
Rat pharmacokinetic study; number of animals not stated in abstract. Rodents lack serum carnosinase, so oral results do not carry over to people. Full text not read.
