- What was measured
- Immunocytochemical localisation of carnosine-like and glutamate immunoreactivity in the frog retina.
What the authors reported
Carnosine-like immunoreactivity was conspicuous in photoreceptors and bipolar cells, with bipolar axon terminals forming five bands in the inner plexiform layer; some amacrine and ganglion cells and Muller cell endfeet were also labelled. Glutamate labelling was highest in bipolar cell terminals and present in photoreceptor terminals, and serial sections showed co-localisation of carnosine and glutamate. The authors propose that carnosine may modulate GABA or glutamate receptors through chelation of zinc and other ions.
