- What was measured
- Free carnosine in skeletal muscle biopsies from patients with neuromuscular diseases, analysed against age, sex and diagnosis by stepwise regression, and in skeletal and heart muscle of rats of various ages.
What the authors reported
Patient age was a significant negative predictor of muscle carnosine (R = -0.40), and rat muscle carnosine also fell with age (R = -0.49 in males, -0.56 in females). Among diagnoses, only amyotrophic lateral sclerosis predicted lower carnosine than controls. The authors link the age-related fall in carnosine to loss of muscle mass and function and suggest denervation as a cause of the reduction in ALS.
Limits of this study
Biopsies from patients with neuromuscular disease rather than healthy volunteers; sample size not stated in abstract. Abstract only.
