l-carnosine and verapamil inhibit hypoxia-induced expression of hypoxia inducible factor (HIF-1 alpha) in H9c2 cardiomyoblasts

- Design
- Laboratory study
- Dose used in the study
- 1 microM carnosine pretreatment of cultured cells
- What was measured
- HIF-1 alpha mRNA and protein in H9c2 rat cardiomyoblasts exposed to 1 percent oxygen, with or without carnosine or verapamil.
What the authors reported
HIF-1 alpha protein rose rapidly within 30 minutes of hypoxia, and this induction was significantly reduced in cells treated with carnosine or verapamil; both agents also lowered the low normoxic HIF-1 levels. Carnosine transiently reduced HIF-1 alpha mRNA, which recovered by 24 hours. The authors suggest both agents affect regulated proteolytic degradation of HIF-1 alpha in heart cells during hypoxia.
Limits of this study
