- What was measured
- Hippocampal intraneuronal amyloid-beta, tau pathology, mitochondrial function and cognitive performance in 3xTg-AD mice given dietary L-carnosine.
What the authors reported
Dietary carnosine strongly reduced hippocampal intraneuronal amyloid-beta and rescued age-related mitochondrial dysfunction. It had no effect on tau pathology and produced only a trend toward improved cognition.
Limits of this study
Transgenic mouse model; dose, duration and group sizes not stated in abstract. Rodents lack serum carnosinase, so oral results do not carry over to people. Full text not read.
