What was measured
Survival, brain TBARS, MAO-B, Na/K-ATPase activity and NMDA receptor glutamate binding in SAMP1 senescence-accelerated mice given carnosine.

What the authors reported

Carnosine raised the 50% survival time by 20% versus controls and increased the number of animals reaching old age. Treated mice had lower TBARS and MAO-B, reduced Na/K-ATPase activity and increased glutamate binding to NMDA receptors, which the authors link to less lipid peroxidation and membrane protein damage.

Limits of this study

Accelerated-ageing mouse strain; dose not stated in abstract. Rodents lack serum carnosinase, so oral results do not carry over to people. Abstract only.
