Vasodilatory actions of the dietary peptide carnosine
Laboratory studyOther animals
- Design
- Laboratory study
- Dose used in the study
- 0.625 to 20 mM carnosine applied to isolated aortic rings
- What was measured
- Relaxation of phenylephrine-preconstricted rat thoracic aortic rings by carnosine, L-histidine or beta-alanine, with and without endothelium and with the guanylate cyclase inhibitor methylene blue; cyclic GMP content.
What the authors reported
Carnosine produced dose-dependent, endothelium-independent relaxation; L-histidine had no effect and beta-alanine caused dose-dependent constriction. Methylene blue reduced the relaxation and lowered cyclic GMP from 65.3 to 8.6 fmol/mg protein, so the effect is at least partly mediated by cyclic GMP.
Limits of this study
Isolated vessel preparation at millimolar concentrations. Abstract only.
